During WWII a women called Denise Weston Austin rescued a baby elephant from Belfast Zoo. The R.U.C. had shot dead 23 animals in the zoo because they were afraid that when the bombs fell, some of the most dangerous animals in the zoo might escape. The elephant’s name was Sheila and she was very lucky to go to Whitewell Road every day. |
